Just 45 minutes from Gatineau, Parc national de Plaisance is ideal for nature lovers. Bordered by the Ottawa River and criss-crossed by marshes, forests and peaceful trails, this park is an ideal playground for wildlife observation, biking, canoeing or simply relaxing during your stay in the heart of nature.
Parc national de Plaisance is an area rich in biodiversity, distinguished by the richness of its natural environments. Comprising 70% water, it is home to unique marshes and an impressive array of plant and animal species. As a matter of fact, over 750 species can be found, including lianas hanging from trees. At times, it might be mistaken for the bayous in Louisiana. This entitles visitors to unique landscapes and wetland. Parc national de Plaisance is also steeped in history! Traces of native occupation dating back over 8,500 years have been found in the park! The mission of national parks is to protect representative or exclusive samples of each natural region. In the case of Parc naturel de Plaisance, the marshes are protected. The aim is twofold: to preserve the richness of these ecosystems and to enable everyone to discover them in a responsible manner.
The sun is shining as we arrive at Parc national de Plaisance. The dirt roads are gradually taking shape, and we can already feel the vacation mood setting in. Signing birds accompanies us as we approach the reception area. Once parked, we enter to ask for recommendations on the park’s must-sees. Without hesitation, they suggest the Zizanie-des-Marais trail.
We head for the trail, located just minutes from the reception. This unique trail is literally floating on water, suspended above the marshes to protect the sensitive flourishing aquatic plants. It feels like walking on a huge dock, winding gently through the marshes, with birds signing as a backdrop. It’s a trail that takes small steps and really observe what’s moving in the water. We were lucky enough to see several species of birds, fish and turtles. It's a short hike of about 1 km, ideal to get away from it all. This type of trail offers a privileged contact with both, vegetation and wildlife. For those who wish to walk a little longer, it is also possible to pursue your hike with another trail nearby. Consult the trail map.
Parc national de Plaisance is renowned as a birdwatching paradise. Curious and beginners, we commit to the game during our hike. It’s the perfect place to start! The only thing required is to carefully listen and keep your eyes peeled to spot several species in a heartbeat. With almost 260 species listed, the park offers a true natural sound concert. You can hear the songs echoing in the trees, the rustle of wings over the water and, occasionally, the startling call of a heron flying close. It’s a real sense of escape, like being far from home, in the middle of nature. We came across several birds along the way.
Back at the park’s reception, we rented bikes to enjoy the rest of the day. With over 40 km of trails to explore, the park is just as easy to discover on two wheels! We set off along the tree-lined paths, where the shades are refreshing the air and the scent of the forest is wrapping us. The road is magnificent and often runs alongside the water, offering restful views. We stop at the Molson picnic area for a lunch by the shore. A cute wooden table awaits us right on the water’s edge. The atmosphere is calm, the water as smooth as a mirror.
At the end of the day, we set off to explore the Canal de la Petite-Nation. It’s a unique place for water sports, not only because you discover an ecosystem different from what we’re used to, but also because you can paddle through narrow, winding ways that give a real sense of adventure. We arrived just in time for sunset. The sky is tinted with orange and pink, and the colors are gently reflected on the calm water. All around us, we can hear the frogs chirping and the birds singing as the day draws to a close. This nature park offers a well-deserved break. During our next visit, we’d like to try the kayak route to the magnificent Chutes du Moulin waterfall. It’s a 4-hour round trip.
Back on the ground, we head for our overnight accommodation: the Étoile ready-to-camp. It’s like a mini-home on a platform, covered with waterproof canvas. Inside, there’s a small open-plan layout with bunk beds, a dining table and a kitchenette, all accommodating up to 6 people. The accommodation is fully equipped, and we were happy with our choice! Everything you need to prepare a meal is there: utensils, hotplate, small fridge, crockery, etc. We didn’t miss a thing. After a busy day, we slept like logs in the comfort of the Étoile ready-to-camp. I highly recommend this option to anyone wanting to combine the pleasure of camping with a good level of comfort.
The next morning, the heat was on. We make the most of our morning before heading out for a swim near the Desjardins picnic area. There’s an unsupervised sandy shore where you can relax and soak up the sun. Near the camping areas, take advantage of the Place de la Famille, where water games, children's play modules and relaxation area provide even more fun for visitors!
During your stay, the park offers a calendar of discovery activities. These include lectures, talks and guided activities, all related to biodiversity and the protection of the Outaouais’ natural wealth.
