Whether you’re a tourist or a resident, the downtown area has some surprises in store for you this summer! Follow the dots on the ground and discover the Culture Trail, a fun route where amazement awaits on every street corner.
This is a public art trail in the heart of downtown Gatineau that brings together several different types of art, such as playful art, murals, sculptures, poetry, paintings, photographs, and more. This year, a brand new map highlights a main route that begins at the Maison du tourisme and includes 24 temporary art installations and 16 murals. The trail highlights talented local artists and features three iconic works by French artist Philippe Katerine, Monsieur Rose s'envole. Just follow the red dots on the ground to take the trail. Providing a platform for public art and artists, the Cultural Trail is now in its ninth year and continues to evolve from year to year. Not only is it free, but it also has something for everyone with its diverse range of works!
On foot, by bike, or even on a scooter, choose the mode of transportation that suits you best. You can start anywhere along the trail, but to make sure you don't miss anything, we recommend starting at the Maison du tourisme, where the first artwork awaits you. The great thing is that you can explore the Cultural Trail at your own pace, following your heart's desire. From June 4 to August 30, free guided tours are offered all summer long, Wednesdays at 6 p.m. and Saturdays at 10 a.m., departing from the Maison du tourisme. It's a great way to rediscover your downtown through the eyes of an art lover. The Cultural Trail is also an interactive experience! On each display stand near the works and on the paper map, you will find a QR code. Scan it, solve the riddle for each work, and collect a letter. Once you have completed the mystery phrase, head to the Maison du tourisme to claim your official T-shirt. Whether you want to combine the walk with a stop for a meal or just take the time to admire each work, the itinerary is up to you.
The sun is shining at the Maison du tourisme, the starting point of the Cultural Trail. I have a map in my hand, which I picked up at the information kiosk. A map is also available online. I follow the red dots on the ground and the interpretive panels along the way to find my next destination. Throughout the walk, I keep my eyes wide open and my mind curious as I discover each installation. Descriptions of the works can be found on the panels near each installation or on the Cultural Trail website. I start with Carton 1, a huge tulip by artist L'abricot, as if a child had cut it out of colored cardboard. A little further on, a flying saucer catches my eye. It is a playful work by artist Éric Tardif, accompanied by little questions that make you smile and think at the same time. In the courtyard of the Maison du citoyen, I take the time to stop. This is where the sound installation A Sound That Never Was-The Dim Coast, created in collaboration with Marc-Alexandre Reinhardt, resonates. The atmosphere is special, almost hypnotic. There's a little mystery in the air... It's impossible not to notice the new creations La fée des trottoirs, which are as surprising as ever. The artist transforms the imperfections of the sidewalk into little touches of magic. You find yourself walking with your eyes on the ground so you don't miss a thing. Before continuing, a stop at Carré Vaudreuil is a must. A striking photo exhibition catches my attention. The images speak for themselves, without a word. Next, I find myself on Laval Street. A huge pink man sits enthroned on the roof of Place Laval. It's one of three Monsieur Rose s'envole sculptures by Philippe Katerine, the French artist with a tender, offbeat, and inimitable style. And that's not all! Two other Monsieur Rose s'envole sculptures are hidden along the route: one hanging on the wall of Piz'za-za, the other nestled in the Aubry alley. It's hard not to take pictures of them.
